Right, so let’s do something fun. Here’s the rules: we’ve got 31 days listed here, each day you give your pick for the current topic until all of them are filled in. If you’re coming into this late, retroactively fill in all previous days in addition to the one that’s currently up. So here we go!
Day 1 - Your first video game: Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Cloudy Mountain for the Mattel Intellivision. And it’s still one of my favorite games of all time.
Day 2 - Your favorite character: Tough decision, but I think in terms of being the most awesome character I can think of it has to be Samus Aran. However if we’re talking strictly based on character development, Jack from Radiata Stories wins as he goes through the most development of any character I can think of from any game. A runner-up would be Cecil from Final Fantasy 4.
Day 3 - A game that is underrated: The above mentioned Final Fantasy 4 is a good example. How about some love for one of the first games to explore the idea of a plot centered on character development instead of “here’s the bad guy, go level up and smack him down.” Chrono Trigger and E.V.O. The Search for Eden are two more examples. Really I could list underrated games all day.
Day 4 - Your guilty pleasure game: Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. And I still think we should play it for the marathon in June.
Day 5 - Game character you feel you are most like, or wish you were: I can't really think of any that I'm like, but if I had to pick one I'd like to more alike with I'd go with Setzer from Final Fantasy VI, just for the lifestyle and the sweet airship.
Day 6 - Most annoying character: HEY! LISTEN! HELLO! Yeah, Navi's probably the most irritating character in gaming history. A close runner-up is Alia from Mega Man X5.
Day 7 - Favorite game couple: Cecil and Rosa from Final Fantasy 4. The characters that paved the way for the romantic subplot in modern RPGs.
Day 8 - Best soundtrack: Without doubt, Chrono Trigger. But the Guilty Gear series does come in at a close second.
Day 9 - Saddest game scene: You know, I think I might just go with Adam marching to his death in Metroid Other M. There's a depressing sense of finality to it that's lost in most other sad scenes in games. As he looks back over his shoulder behind locked doors at Samus, knowing full well that heading into Sector Zero to engage its self-destruct means his death, you just know he's not getting a happy ended when he utters "No objections, right Lady?"
Day 10 - Best gameplay: You know, I might just have to offer more than one possible answer here. For a platformer, I think Mega Man X2 might just have had the best gameplay for me. For an RPG I think I'll have to go with Final Fantasy XII.
Day 11 - Gaming system of choice: Right now the PS2 and Wii.
Day 12 - A game everyone should play: E.V.O. the Search for Eden. Awesome game for the SNES that is almost completely unknown. Terranigma might be another good one to recommend.
Day 13 - A game you’ve played more than five times: Super Metroid. But really any Metroid game.
Day 14 - Current (or most recent) gaming wallpaper: Twilight Princess or Metroid Prime 3, I can't remember which it was though.
Day 15 - A game you’re playing right now: The Legend of Zelda, and really beginning to dislike the overworld music so very much. But then, it wouldn't be March if I enjoyed the music by the end.
Day 16 - Game with the best cut scenes: Probably Final Fantasy VI. Sure, there are current gen games that look fantastic or have voice acting, but consider. FF6 evoked a great number of emotions by having sprites a mere 24 pixels tall jumping around and winking, or wagging their fingers and a number of other things, all without voices or amazing 3D graphics. On top of that it may be one of the first games to start the idea of the in-game cutscene.
Day 17 - Favorite antagonist: Well, if not for the fact that he got so utterly campy at the end, I'd say Lucifer from Dante's Inferno. Until the end he was the only thing making that game good. One suave bastard. But since he didn't stay awesome and Kefka did, it's definitely Kefka from FF6.
Day 18 - Favorite protagonist: I'm going to go with Locke from FF6. He's the best thief... er... treasure hunter, I mean.
Day 19 - A game setting you wish you lived in: I'd have to say the Kingdom of Zeal from Chrono Trigger. Of course it would have to be many, many years before the fall of the kingdom though. And I'd have to be an Enlightened One to boot.
Day 20 - Favorite genre: RPGs are definitely my favorite genre, but platformers or action/adventure games might be a close second.
Day 21 - Game with the best story: That's a difficult choice. That's kind of like asking a parent who their favorite child is. I'll have to go with two on this one. First, for giving me that sad sinking feeling, Final Fantasy X. It has to have one of the most bittersweet endings I've seen in a game, and I love my bittersweet endings. Second, for sheer awesome, Chrono Trigger. Not screams awesome and kicks destiny in the nuts like three teenages flung into the future to witness the end of their world that will happen long after they're dead and take all of three seconds to decide it's their problem and they're going to do something about it.
Day 22 - A game sequel which disappointed you: Chrono Cross. However the music is awesome.
Day 23 - Game you think had the best graphics or art style: I don't know that I'd consider it the best, but No More Heroes had a very unique art style that still seems awesome. Similarly The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker gives the same impression (probably because they're very similar cel shading styles).
Day 24 - Favorite classic game: Depends on if you mean before the NES. If yes, then Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Cloudy Mountain. If not, it's a toss-up between Mega Man 2 and Dragon Quest 1.
Day 25 - A game you plan on playing: Final Fantasy Versus XIII when it hopefully gets released this year.
Day 26 - Best voice acting: I'm going to have to go with Final Fantasy XII. It had absolutely superb voice acting to the point that there was never a time I didn't want the characters to speak.
Day 27 - Most epic scene ever: I've got to give this one to MGS3. While it had a lot of really good scenes, the best one had to be at the end after defeating The Boss. Here's this awesome character that you jut can't help but love and you hate that she has to die even though you know she needs to. But what makes the scene so awesome? It's the fact that the game doesn't kill The Boss in a cutscene, but that it makes the player pull the figurative trigger to do it. Press X to kill The Boss might just be the best example of why Kojima is an amazing game designer and also why he's a massive jackass.
Day 28 - Favorite game developer: This is a tough one to answer. Square's definitely up there, but they've started to slack off in the quality department ever since the merger with Enix. Konami's really awesome as well and there's really only so much to fault them with. Nintendo is pretty sweet as well, but they do sometimes have a habit of not listening to what the fans want. Still, if I had to pick one, I'd have to say it's Nintendo, as they've developed the majority of my favorite series.
Day 29 - A game you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving: I can admit it, I thought the idea behind Kingdom Hearts was absolutely stupid, but then I went out and rented the game and it ate up nine straight hours of my day. So it became a must own game, and the rest is history.
Day 30 - Your favorite game of all time: I can't say. I don't really think I could narrow it down to a single favorite game. I suppose it would have to be one I can play over and over without ever getting bored of it, and for me that's pretty much any game in either the Metroid, Zelda or Final Fantasy series. I can't really narrow it any further than that, sadly.
Day 31 - Honorable mention: Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It's a great game, well paced, balanced, and has great gameplay. It is easily one of my favorite games if only for how mind numbingly fun it is to play.
